How to make black beans

I don’t want to bore you with a long story BUT just know that I spent 38 years of my life without liking beans in almost any form, then last week I went to a vegan restaurant in the city and tasted the most delicious beans in the world so I came home, all inspired and came up with this recipe.

This is my best and only beans recipe I’ve ever posted, you will want to make extra to have tons of leftovers for the week. Believe me.


  • 4 cups of black beans

  • 2 teaspoons of ground cumin

  • 3 teaspoons of ancho powder OR and ideally Chile Colorado from Sonora, México

  • The zest of two limes

  • The juice of two limes

  • 1 tablespoon of kosher salt

  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil


  1. Cook your beans according to the package instructions. Drain them and reserve 2 cups of the cooking liquid.

  2. Blend the beans, cooking liquid and rest of the ingredients until you get a smooth paste.
