How to make a smoky hibiscus margarita (AKA Smoky Danielita)

We recently traveled to México City where we tried the most interesting cocktail we’ve had in a while and so this is my attempt to make it approachable for all of us, it is a mezcal based cocktail so it already has a natural smoky flavor profile but you can 100% add more of that smokiness by using a cocktail smoker!

Ingredients

  • 1 Oz mezcal, your preference

  • 1 Oz hibiscus syrup (this is the typical base of hibiscus water. Boiling 1 part water, 1 part hibiscus flowers and 1 part sugar)

  • 1 tsp agave syrup

  • The juice of 1/2 lime, not lemon

  • Ginger kombucha, ginger beer or sparkling water to top

  • Preferred garnish

Procedure

  1. Use a mixer glass filled with ice to add mezcal, hibiscus syrup, agave and lime juice. Stir well for about 20 seconds.

  2. Pour mixture into a coupe glass and top with ginger beer.

  3. Optional: smoke the glass and garnish with dried fruit.

  4. Optional: If you want to add ice to this cocktail, use an old fashioned type of glass and fill it up with ice. This version is the one you see in the pictures above.

Salud!
