Homemade Almond Milk

Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Hola hola!

Hope everyone’s awesome these days. Today I want to talk about milk, it’s been probably more than 5 years since we drink only almond milk at home mostly for health reasons. We have tried almost every kind of flavor, regular, regular unsweetened, vanilla regular, vanilla unsweetened, and so on. My favorite by far is the good old regular almond milk.

For this recipe I want to share with you something that I want to start doing which is “Homemade Almond Milk”. This probably not the most cost effective solution (you will spend around $3.5 to make a quarter or almond milk from scratch) BUT if you’re looking to get rid of all the chemicals or you simply cannot find almond milk at the grocery store, well please go ahead and keep reading!

Ingredients (to make 1 quarter)

  • 1 cup of almonds

  • 4 cups of water

  • 2 dates (I will use these as sweetener, you can skip them if you have sugar issues)

Preparation

  1. Put the almonds in a small bowl and cover them with filtered water. First you will soak the almonds overnight or for more than 8 hours. You will make this so you can smash them to get the most of them.

  2. Next step is to drain the almonds; you will notice they almost double its size since by now they’re super hydrated!

  3. Now put the hydrated almonds in a blender along with the 4 cups of water and 2 dates (you can add no, less or more dates as you wish). Blend for about 4-5 minutes until water turns white.

  4. Use a cheesecloth to separate the almond pieces from the actual almond milk, make sure to press hard to extract as much liquid as possible.

  5. Last, just pour the milk in a glass container and you’re good to go!

Just as heads up, do not waste the remaining blended almonds! Just put them in a zip lock bag in the freezer and use them as garnish for your salads or as the fiber element for your shakes and cereal.

Enjoy!
